Land[e]scape: The Human Connection to Nature
‘And Nature… then to me was all in all’: this is the idea captured by the upcoming exhibition at the Hatton Gallery. In a world preoccupied with issues of sustainability and climate change, new relationships are emerging between humans and the natural world. By examining the traditional vision of nature as an idyllic retreat offering solitude, spiritual refreshment and liberation of the mind, Land[e]scape explores the fragile relationship between mankind and nature and its relevance today. Selected works are drawn from the Hatton Gallery’s own collection, with eminent artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Ian Hamilton Finlay and Alan Davie represented. In addition, Land[e]scape features works by contemporary artists practising in the region including Stéphanie Beaulieu, Ben Muir and Rachel Maloney. Land[e]scape complements Littoral Drifter the current solo exhibition by artist Ben Cook. Cook’s work, an alternative interpretation of the coastal landscape according to surf culture, raises questions of the impact of human activity on the natural environment. Cook’s responses to nature correspond with those explored in Land[e]scape. Directed by emerging curators, Land[e]scape is a next-generation reaction to an enduring relationship between man and nature. The exhibition opens with an evening of viewing and refreshments on 31st March, from 6 - 8pm, free of charge. All are welcome. Curator-lead tours and interactive workshops for all ages, will offer a truly exhilarating experience. |
